CHAPTER SIX

RACHEL STUDIED HERSELF in the mirror, hoping the bikini she wore wasn’t too blatant. It was the only suit she’d brought. And she hadn’t used it once since she arrived in Spain. She tried to imagine how Luis would like it.

Not that it mattered, she told herself, but she suspected he would like it a lot. Smiling, she turned to don the coverup and slip into sandals. She didn’t want to keep him waiting. Nor keep herself in suspense as to the reason for his invitation. Was it to get to know her better, or try an inquisition? Weren’t the Spanish famous for that?

She laughed with happiness. Whatever happened today, it was for the two of them. She could forget her quest for a while, forget about her father. And hope Luis would forget about his beloved wife.

When Luis and Rachel arrived at the sandy stretch that was south of the town, well away from the influence of the fishing boats, Rachel wondered if she’d misread things. Luis had been as cordial as a good host should be. Yet there had been nothing of what she expected.

Marcos, Luis’s driver, drove them. He unloaded a beach umbrella and two folding chairs which he promptly delivered to a wide vacant spot near the water’s edge. Rachel marched across the sand, delighted she wouldn’t have to lie on a towel, trying to wiggle until she found a comfortable spot. When Marcos returned carrying a cooler, she glanced at Luis. He seemed to think of everything.

The towels Marcos deposited across the back of the chairs were fluffy and large, a colorful rainbow of hues. She would be able to spot their location even if she swam out quite a way.

“Nice,” she said, sitting on the edge of her chaise and looking around her.

The water lapped at the shore. The pristine white sand reflected the sun so brightly it almost hurt. Glad for her sunglasses, she studied the others on the beach. Mostly families with small children, she watched as they cavorted in the water, ran up and down the beach, or solemnly built castles of sand.

Rachel couldn’t remember going to the beach often when she was a child. Her father had been too busy with work, and the succession of housekeepers hadn’t wanted to bother.

If she ever married…

She shook her head at the thought. She didn’t want to get married. Look at the pitfalls that awaited the unwary.

Sadly, being an only child, she didn’t even have the prospect of nieces and nephews to look forward to.

“Not to your liking?” Luis asked.

“What?” She looked at him.

“By your expression, I take it this doesn’t suit?”

“Oh, no, I was thinking of something else. This is lovely. With the umbrella I could stay here all day and not worry about burning.”

“There’s enough reflected rays from the sand and water to take precautions.”

She rummaged in her carryall and pulled out a bottle of sunscreen. “Ta da! I came prepared.”

Lathering the scented lotion over her legs, Rachel was reminded of afternoons in high school when she and her friends lounged by a pool.
